Set in the middle of Te Ti Bay looking across towards Motumaire Island, this pleasant location is suitable for kite surfers and windsurfers of all abilities.
The beach is sandy and the size depends on the state of the tide, with only a limited area to set up in at high tide. It can be busy in the summer months between December and March, so launching in the water could be advisable. Water temperatures are in the mid-20s in summer, and will fall to around 17° C in winter.
The best conditions here are found in the summer between December and February, with the wind blowing best from the north or the north-east. You will get speeds of between 10 and 20 knots quite consistently, but don't be tempted to try surfing down the river if the wind is blowing from the west as the currents will be difficult. The water is usually clear but can be dirty after a big rainstorm washes debris down the river. The surface is usually choppy, but if the wind is strong it can also have small waves.
This is a popular tourist destination and is set up to cater for them. There are plenty of rooms available nearby, and if you're on a tight budget you can also camp here. There are public toilets, parking is close to the beach, and there is a good choice of places to buy food and drink.
Be wary of the rocks at high tide, and watch out for sharp shells on the beach are especially after a storm. The currents can also be strong here, and you need to keep your eyes open for swimmers.
